openingNumerous sources have told the story of Florence Chadwick, who on one foggy morning in July of 1952 waded into the waters off Catalina Island, intent on swimming across the channel to the Southern California mainland. This challenge was not too difficult for Chadwick as she had been the first woman ever to swim the English Channel in both directions.

However, on this day, having lost sight of the land because of the fog, Chadwick decided to give up. As it turned out, she had only been one-half mile from reaching her goal. She was not exhausted or cold. Rather the fog, having obscured her vision from the goal, was the reason she quit. Still, some two months later, on a clear day, Florence Chadwick attempted the same challenge – and this time succeeded, setting a new speed record, because she was able to keep her eye upon the goal.

As Christians, we have a goal: to follow Jesus, to become like Him, to love and serve Him with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength. But, we often encounter the world’s fog, which can obscure our vision and keep us from seeing the goal clearly. I’m afraid too many of us have chosen to give up pursuing the goal because we become distracted by fog – the fog of busyness, of career, of material pursuits, of self-interest. We will all experience foggy days, spiritually speaking. Don’t quit. Persevere. Do your best to keep your eyes focused on Jesus who awaits with reward in hand, at the finish line.

In Philippians 3:14, the apostle Paul says, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

I love the words of that old hymn written by H.H. Lemmel –

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face;
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace.

Today, let the fresh breeze of the Holy Spirit’s presence in your life blow away the world’s fog. Fix your eyes upon Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.

Here is your copy of firstIMPRESSIONS, Volume 9.46. Live for God, on purpose, looking unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith.

filledFilled And Overflowing

Here in Delaware, it has been raining. A lot. For a good while. In fact, I can’t remember a year when we have had more rain than this year. According to information compiled by NOAA, the six-month period from April through September of this year is the 7th wettest in history! And, I can tell you first-hand that it has been very rainy in the six weeks following that recorded period!

I really didn’t have to look up the records to know that it has rained a lot. All I needed to do was look in my back yard. It has rained so much that the extensive re-seeding I did in the spring has literally drowned and nearly washed away. The ground is water-logged, and is so muddy that you can’t really walk there at all.

The rain that has come down, over such a long period of time, has affected all of the ground around me.

And my question to you is this – has it been raining in your life?

I speak not of liquid rain, but rather of the latter rain! Has there been an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in your life? As the “old-timers” used to say, have you been standing under the spout where the glory comes out?!

In Ephesians 5:18, the Bible says “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” While our English Bibles all say “be filled,” in the original language it is more accurately understood as “be being filled” with the Spirit. In other words, it is not a command that we be filled once-for-all or even occasionally, but that we be filled continually.

When a person asks Christ to be their Savior, the Holy Spirit then dwells within them. When a believer receives the baptism in the Holy Spirit, that same spirit that dwells within them, baptizes them and fills them. But, a true Spirit-filled Christian needs more than that one-time experience – they need to be BEING filled. They need to be filled and overflowing with the Spirit of God.

When a cup is filled too full and overflows, all the area around it will become wet. Much like that cup, the truly Spirit-filled believer will affect the area all around them as they overflow with the Spirit of God.

Each of us should seek to not only be saved, and baptized in the Spirit. But, we need to go beyond that! Join us this Sunday morning here at WFA as we look at what it means to be “Filled and Overflowing!” Don’t miss it!

beanThe Lesson of the Coffee Bean

A daughter complained to her father about how hard things were for her." As soon as I solve one problem," she said, "another one comes up. I'm tired of struggling."

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen where he filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to a boil. In one he placed carrots, in the second, eggs, and in the last, ground coffee beans. He let them sit and boil, without saying a word.

The daughter impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After a while, he went over and turned off the burners. He fished out the carrots and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them a bowl. He poured the coffee into a bowl. Turning to her he asked, "Darling, what do you see?"

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

He brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. She smiled, as she tasted its rich flavor.

She asked, "What does it mean, Father?" He explained that each of them had faced the same adversity – boiling water – but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak.

The egg was fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. By being in the boiling water, they changed the water.

He asked his daughter, "When adversity knocks on your door, which are you?"

thanksA Heart Filled with Thanks for His Love

by Marji "Mike" Kruger

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. – 1 Chronicles 16:34

Perhaps the thing that we should be most thankful for is His Love! The ultimate expression of God's love is seen in the Incarnation and Crucifixion. The Cross assures us of God's endless love. His Word affirms His love for us...

• The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: "I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness. (Jeremiah 31:3)

• ...His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1-26)

• You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. (Psalms 86:5)

• ...His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1-26)

• Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. (Psalms 107:8-9)

• ...His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1-26)

• "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

• ...His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1-26)

• Jesus said, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. (John 14:23)

• ...His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1-26)

• ...Jesus said: the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. (John 16:27)

• God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

• ...His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1-26)

• Once we become God's children, nothing can separate us from His love: For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38)

• ...His love endures forever. (Psalm 136:1-26)

• Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. (Psalms 63:3)

Do your lips praise Him from an overflowing heart filled with thanks?

changeI Don't Want Them to Change Me

by Alan Smith

Elie Wiesel was brought up in a closely knit Jewish community in Sighet, Transylvania (Romania). When he was fifteen years old, his family was herded aboard a train and deported by Nazis to the Auschwitz death camp. Wiesel's mother and younger sister died at Auschwitz — his two older sisters survived. Wiesel and his father were then taken to Buchenwald, where his father also perished. Wiesel has devoted his life to ensuring that the world does not forget the atrocities of the Nazis, and that they are not repeated. He tells this story:

A just man decided he must save humanity. So he chose a city, the most sinful of all cities. Then he studied. He learned all the art of moving people, changing minds, changing hearts. He came to a man and woman and said, "Don't forget that murder is not good, it is wrong." In the beginning, people gathered around him. It was so strange, somewhat like a circus. They gathered and they listened. He went on and on and on.

Days passed. Weeks passed. After a while, they stopped listening. After many years passed, a child stopped him and said, "What are you doing? Don't you see nobody is listening? Why do you continue shouting and shouting? Why?"

And the man answered the child, "I'll tell you why. In the beginning, I was convinced that if I were to shout loud enough, they would change. Now I know they won't change. But if I shout even louder, it's because I don't want them to change me."

We live in a world where there is a battle going on. I'm not talking about the conflict in Iraq or Afghanistan or Kenya. You may not even be aware that this battle is taking place, but I assure you that it is. It is a spiritual battle being waged between God and his people and Satan and his people (Eph. 6:12). It is a battle for the control of the hearts and minds of men and women, including you and the people around you.

We sometimes use the word "evangelism" to describe our attempt to influence ungodly men in a way that will draw them to God, the God who created them and loves them. But we sometimes forget that efforts (sometimes diligent efforts) are being made by ungodly men to pull us away from God. Be assured of this: One of two things is happening – either you are having an influence on other people, or other people are having an influence on you. It's a constant battle, much like a tug-of-war.

And there are times, as in the story above, when we need to speak up or take some action, not so much to change others, but to prevent others from changing us.

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:1-2)

favorPray for Favor

You can't please everybody all the time. And it's a big mistake to try. Your constant need for approval can end up costing you God's best. When you're doing anything worthwhile, expect opposition from those who aren't privy to God's plan for your life. That goes with the turf. Notice, Jesus "made himself of no reputation" (Philippians 2:7). He wasn't always well thought of by others, but He knew He had God's approval – and that's what mattered to Him!

In Proverbs 21:1, Solomon says that just like changing the direction of a moving river, God can change hearts and give you favor with those who'd otherwise reject you. He also said, "When God approves of your life, even your enemies will end up shaking your hand." Does that mean you won't encounter opposition or people who disagree with you? No, but when you do, just concentrate on pleasing God and let Him deal with the fallout.

Remember, God takes up where you leave off. When you've exhausted all your efforts He can step in and open doors with the right people at just the right time. The truth is, He can get you a better job than you could get on your own, and give you blessings that, humanly speaking, you don't deserve or qualify for. Just like the Holy Spirit enabled Jesus to fulfill His life's mission (see Luke 4:18-19), God will call, equip and enable you to fulfill His plan for your life. So stop trying so hard to make things happen on your terms, and begin praying for God's favor!

safeHow to Stay Safe in the World Today

1. Avoid riding in automobiles because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents.

2. Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents occur in the home.

3. Avoid walking on streets or sidewalks because 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians.

4. Avoid traveling by air, rail, or water because 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transportation.

5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in Hospitals. So, above all else, avoid hospitals.

BUT, you will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church, and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at church!

And, Bible study is safe too. The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less.

So, for SAFETY'S sake, attend church, and read your Bible. IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!

lastThe Last Impression

A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide."

And for plenty of good reasons, since:

1. it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting

2. it is a major component in acid rain

3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state

4. accidental inhalation can kill you

5. it contributes to erosion

6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes

7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients

He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.

Forty-three (43) said yes, six (6) were undecided, and only one (1) knew that the chemical was water.

The title of his prize-winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?"

He feels the conclusion is obvious.

People can certainly be quite gullible. Including many Christians! Almost every day, I receive a forwarded email from someone, claiming some piece of fiction to be factual, and demanding that I then forward that email on to everyone in my address book. Even more gullible are the Christians who believe they are filled with the Holy Spirit, yet who have no affect on those around them. They are almost as gullible as the Christians who believe they can be strong in the Lord, yet never attend church!

Don’t be gullible! Hope to see you at WFA this Sunday, as we worship the Lord together, and as we share God’s Word!
